Animate a row of three UI cards with MotionUI presets, coordinated timing, and easing while keeping your After Effects timeline easy to refine.

What you’ll learn

  • MotionUI sequences layers by on-screen position, not selection order.

  • Card-level animation keeps text and artwork together while reducing independent timing adjustments.

  • Easing applies to selected keyframes, not merely selected layers.

Build a staggered entrance for three UI cards without adjusting every layer’s timing individually.

  • You will: Animate a card row in reading order with coordinated timing.

  • Prerequisites: macOS or Windows, MotionUI, After Effects, a composition containing three cards

How do you prepare the cards for a clean stagger?

Step 1: Open MotionUI and prepare your composition

Start in the MotionUI app and access plugin setup from the app. MotionUI is a desktop app for macOS and Windows by HIVER connecting Figma, After Effects, Claude Code and Codex. For this tutorial, use its After Effects tools to apply and refine the entrance.

If your design is in Figma, use MotionUI’s direct Figma to After Effects import before preparing the animation. Open the resulting composition and identify the layers that represent your cards.

Give each card a descriptive layer name, such as Overview card, Activity card, and Reports card. If a card consists of separate artwork and text layers, organize those parts into a card-level precomposition in After Effects before sequencing.

Expected result: Each complete card can move as a unit, with its internal content staying together.

Step 2: Define the reading order and static elements

For the example, arrange Overview, Activity, and Reports in a horizontal row. Use a left-to-right entrance to follow the reading order of this English-language interface.

Keep the page background, navigation, and section heading static. Leave the text and icons inside each card fixed relative to their card. Select the card-level layers for the entrance, rather than sequencing every visible element.

Write down the intended motion before applying anything: cards enter upward, begin in reading order, and settle while the surrounding interface stays still.

Expected result: The animation has a clear scope: one coordinated entrance across the row, with no competing movement in the interface shell.

How do you apply a MotionUI preset and sequence?

Step 3: Set up the entrance preset

Select the card layers in your After Effects composition. In MotionUI’s Animate tab, use Settings to choose the duration and select In for an entrance.

Use Slide Up as the starting preset for this example. Keep the duration consistent across the cards so the stagger comes from their start times rather than different movement lengths.

Control

Verified behavior

In, Out or Both

Chooses an entrance, exit, or both.

Apply to multiple layers

Enables coordinated sequencing across layers.

Direction and delay

Set the sequence direction and delay.

Sequence adjustments

Tighten or spread the stagger.

Expected result: Your entrance settings are ready for a shared preset. The MotionUI entrance and sequence instructions cover the same controls.

Step 4: Apply the sequence in reading order

Enable Apply to multiple layers. Choose the direction that follows the row from left to right and set a brief delay. With the card layers selected, click Slide Up.

MotionUI bases sequence order on the layers’ positions on screen. Check the cards’ layout and chosen direction rather than relying on the order in which you selected them.

Preview the composition. Aim for Activity to begin while Overview is still entering, followed by Reports while Activity is moving. Use the sequence adjustments to tighten or spread that overlap.

Tip: Keep the delay shorter than the entrance duration as a starting design choice. Overlapping entrances help the cards read as a row rather than separate scenes.

Expected result: The cards enter upward in reading order, with related movement and staggered starts. MotionUI creates animation you can refine in After Effects.

How do you refine the entrance without cluttering the timeline?

Step 5: Refine the selected keyframes

Select the entrance keyframes in the After Effects timeline. Open Easing in MotionUI, pick a preset curve or drag the curve handles, then click Apply Easing to Keys.

Apply a consistent curve to the related card movements. Preview before making another change. If the movement still feels slow, check the distance between the keyframes as well as the easing curve.

Keep the entrance at the card level while refining. Avoid adding independent text or icon entrances unless they serve a specific reading need. See how to adjust keyframe easing for the selection workflow.

Expected result: The cards share a consistent acceleration and settling behavior, with the entrance controlled through their existing keyframes.

Step 6: Test the complete row at full speed

Play the composition at full speed from before the entrance. Watch the interface as a viewer rather than following individual keyframes.

  • If the row feels like separate reveals, tighten the sequence delay.

  • If the cards appear simultaneous, spread the stagger slightly.

  • If the movement drags, review duration and easing separately.

  • If attention leaves the cards, check that surrounding layers remain static.

Expected result: Overview leads, Activity follows, and Reports completes the row without a noticeable wait for the final card. Change one timing variable per preview so each adjustment is easy to evaluate.

What should you check when troubleshooting?

  • Cards enter in the wrong order: Check their on-screen positions and the sequence direction.

  • Text separates from a card: Check the card-level organization and animate the complete card unit.

  • Easing makes no visible change: Select keyframes in the timeline, not only the layers, then apply the curve again.

  • The final card feels late: Tighten the sequence before changing every card’s entrance duration.
